Why PNG instead of JPG for my iPhone photos?

PNG is lossless, so it's the right choice when you need an exact pixel copy for editing or print — JPG is smaller but re-compresses the image.

Does this work with Live Photos?

The still-image HEIC frame converts to PNG normally. The separate video component of a Live Photo isn't part of the image conversion.
